This week of May 5-9 was Teacher Appreciation Week and I wanted to take the time to highlight one specific teacher, Ms. Lauren Mays from North Lake Middle School.
“I spent three years as a sub before I became a full time teacher, and I did that in about 2015,” Mays, a teacher at Northlake, said. When she graduated from college in 2011 there were many teachers in the profession, but now that is not a problem. She filled in an opening after the 7th and 8th grade English teacher left.
“Originally, I didn’t have anything I was passionate about when I was getting ready to go to college, but I knew that I wanted to do something where I felt like I was making a difference,” Mays said.
She was an inspiration to me and many others; she genuinely cared about her students. In one situation, she gave me a real apology and cared about how I felt. She was new to North Lake when I was there, but now she is a veteran, still teaching there four years later. She is an inspiration and I hope I can be like her when I am older.
