At Arrowhead High School, the journalism class plays a vital role in producing The Arrowhead, the school’s newspaper. Students are taught essential skills in different areas such as reporting, writing about sports, features, news, and editorial columns. This is a year-long course filled with fun, different activities, and a variety of new information that is learned throughout the two semesters.
Mr. Rauch, Arrowhead’s Journalism teacher, shared his insights into the class. Rauch, initially retiring after years of teaching, decided to take on the role of leading Arrowhead’s journalism class. Stating, “I wanted to finish what we all started in the fall,” he said, reflecting on the challenges of being new to teaching the journalism course. “The hardest part for me was not having a background in journalism, but I wanted to be able to provide consistency for the students in this class.”
Rauch also emphasized the rewarding nature of Arrowhead’s journalism course. “The most rewarding part about this class is getting the opportunity to see kids publishing their work, for literally the world to see,” he explained. “I get to see students publishing their work to major audiences.”
For those who are looking to enhance their writing, as well as critical thinking skills, Rauch recommends the class. “As an elective, it’s important because students get to develop valuable skills that will develop beyond high school,” Rauch said.
Arrowhead’s journalism class is exciting as well as impactful for the students who choose to take it, giving students the chance to contribute to something bigger.
