The Job of a Garbage Man

Our communities and neighborhoods would not be as clean without the jobs of garbage men and women. According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency, 250 million tons of trash was generated by the Americans in 2011. If the garbage men did not do their jobs, all of this waste and trash would be over flowing into our homes, schools and communities.

After eating dinner, changing diapers or cleaning out the garage, what do you do with all the extra food or waste? You throw it in the garbage and set it on the curb, trying to get rid of it as soon as possible.  You wait for your garbage man to come pick it up and then you never think of it again.

Without the garbage men that trash would sit on your curb and never move.

The job of a garbage man is not easy. They have to deal with our trash every single working day. They bring our trash and waste from our curbs to landfills. Not only do they transfer all of our garbage, but they also work with large recycling machines that require a lot of physical activity to control.

We, as a society, are not thankful enough for the garbage men and all that they do. The job is not just difficult, but it is also very dangerous.

”Sanitation workers often put in long shifts, traveling up and down our streets to pick up trash while dodging impatient drivers — who occasionally hit the guys who are emptying trash cans,” said Jane McGrath, a journalist.

This is one of the reasons why being a garbage man is very dangerous and ranks high on the lists of dangerous jobs. Some other reasons include, working with powerful machines and touching unsanitary garbage all day.

Also, besides the angry drivers, garbage men have to deal with natural disasters and weather. The men have to work in snow, rain and sleet. This makes their job much more difficult.

We all know garbage has a very disturbing and distinct smell and we want nothing to do with it. That is why we get it out of our houses as soon as possible. But the garbage men have to deal with this stench every day. The smell that we are able to just get rid of right away lingers with the garbage men throughout their everyday lives.

I am very thankful for what the garbage men do to help keep our communities sanitary and I believe that they should be recognized for their work more often.
