Homework dates back to the Roman Empire. While it wasn’t necessarily called ‘homework,’ many students worked on their studies outside the classroom.
“I never want to do homework, but I have to,” Lydia Peterson, a sophomore, said. Although many students dislike homework, they still do it for the grade. According to the University of California, students who do homework outside of school outperformed 69% of students in a no-homework class.
Although homework gets done it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s getting done on time. Many students end up doing homework a few days or the night before the due date, which can cause high stress levels.
“It’s fun to never do it and then do all of it in one day at the end of the year,” Veronika Tanieieva, a sophomore, said.
Edutopia.org states, “Estimates indicate that 80 to 95 percent of college students engage in procrastination, approximately 75 percent consider themselves procrastinators, and almost 50 percent procrastinate consistently and problematically.”
Although many students do their work at the last minute, they still get the work done.
Although homework slowly became a norm for students in many countries, it was officially added to school curricula during the 19th century. Today, many students wouldn’t do homework if they had the option.
“I don’t like it,” Emily Adams, a sophomore, said.
A survey done by EducationWeek.org showed that 90% of students felt stressed by homework. Another study by Healthline.com states that 56% of students list homework as a primary stressor in school.
For many students, they feel that they get too much work than they can handle which causes high stress levels and can even damage their physical health. For many students, homework has become the reason they dislike school.
“It is so bad. I hate it and never want to do it,” Coda Stuart, a sophomore, said.
According to Healthline.com, there are many physical effects stress can have on a student such as headaches, stomach aches, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and weight loss. Healthline.com states that researchers found 80% of students experience at least one of those symptoms and 44% experience at least three or more.
Homework can take up a lot of a student’s time which can affect their daily activities.
“Homework feels very overwhelming especially when I have other things going outside of school,” Payton Brunner, a sophomore, said.
According to Healthline.com researchers found that students who spend too much time with homework were more likely to stop seeing friends and not participate in hoodies.
Healthline.com states, “Many students felt forced or obligated to choose homework over developing other talents or skills.”
Homework remains to be a big part of student’s education and can benefit students by teaching independent thinking, building discipline, and learning to study effectively. There are many things homework can help with, but teachers need to know how to make sure that there is a good balance when it comes to homework and a students life outside of school.
