Should There Still be Snowdays? – Vivian Powers, Junior
Growing up in Wisconsin, especially during winter, I always prayed for a snow day. I did all the traditions that would make them happen: Spoon under my pillow and pajamas inside out before bed. I would always hope for a snow day to get a break from the stress and from my head throbbing from how much knowledge I had to bottle up in my brain. They were a day to sled with friends, watch a movie, catch up on work, and spend time with family.
But sadly, due to the current state of trying to make people safe and keeping some kids online, there won’t be any snow days. I personally think that it is a bad idea not to have kids have a break from digital screens for seven to eight hours for five days. And having a snow day would be much healthier to get out instead of being inside all day. I understand the weekend is time to catch up on school or extra sleep, but sometimes it would be a treat to have a little break during winter when roads are being shut down due to either a lot of snow or weather below zero.
I don’t think it would be wrong if we put school on hold for one day. As I said in the beginning, students can use that day to catch up or get extra sleep or, with exams coming up, work on what they need to do well. Or if they haven’t been able to go outside due to the homework pile, they can take an hour break to get fresh air and sled or build a snowman to get a sense of being back to normal again before the lockdown and quarantining.
Having snow days is a beneficial thing for students to have because it can be a day for fun, relaxing, working on assignments, studying extra for a hard test, and prepping for exams.
