Arrowhead High School’s 2013 Homecoming theme was Dancing through the Decades. Students got into the homecoming spirit by celebrating from September 22nd to 28th through spirit days. Weekend festivities started with a pep rally on Friday and end with the “Dancing through the Decades” dance on Saturday at North Campus starting at 8:00pm.

Though Homecoming arrives at the beginning of the school year, Student Senate has been planning for months to make this Homecoming memorable.

“During the first Student Senate executive board meeting, every person comes with a list of possible themes,” says President Megan Lipke. “We then sat down to hash out the pros and cons. This year’s winner was Dancing through the Decades. It’s as simple yet simultaneously complicated as that.”

For students, Homecoming started on Sunday (9/22) with the kick-off bonfire and student versus staff flag football game (located on the Freshman Softball field). Though Homecoming week started off with a landslide loss to the teachers, students’ hopes for an official victory against West was still alive.

Aspiring to increase student participation, the opportunity arose for any willing student band to play at the kickoff bonfire. This opportunity aimed to draw attendance from a student demographic who didn’t typically attend homecoming events. According to a number of students in attendance, the variety of bands did just that.

This year, students participated in specific spirit days, starting with Monday’s Pajama or Crazy Hair Day, Tuesday’s Nejedlo or Greece, Wednesday’s Disco or Star Wars, Thursday’s Rock Band or Twins day, and Friday’s RED OUT!

“The week started off really strong, but there were some days that I, admittedly, didn’t dress up; not because I didn’t want to participate, but simply because I didn’t know what to wear,” says one senior who wished to remain anonymous. “But I feel like everyone did a great job for Friday’s Red Out.”

Friday kicked off with the pep rally, featuring the student verses staff basketball game and the dance off. After a valiant effort from the students, the teachers ended up winning the basketball game.

The dance off is the annual tradition where sports teams and clubs compete to see who has the moves like Jagger. This year, for the first time, a group of female teachers entered into the dance off and won the Minnie Mouse stuffed animal trophy.

Also this year, the students enjoyed another assembly presented by the High School National Tour. Advertized as a fine arts event, the assembly featured performances by up-and-coming artists. This exposure event was met with mixed reviews from students. Some students jumped at the chance to see the rising starlet Trevor Jackson grace the stage while others jumped at the chance to escape the locked in event.

The Arrowhead versus Waukesha West Football game started at 7:00 pm. Half time included a performance from the marching band, the Hawkettes and Arrowhead’s cheerleaders. And the Warhawks went on to capture a 13-7 victory from the Wolverines.

Homecoming festivities ended on Saturday night with the Homecoming Dance from 8:00 – 11:30 pm. The dance was well attended.

“After looking at ticket sales, this homecoming was the highest attended in a number of years,” says Lipke.
