The Hawkettes Grow

The Arrowhead Hawkettes have experienced some major changes on their team since last year, but have the changes have been better or worse for the team.

Many of you have already heard the dance team and the Hawkettes have been combined together. They also have changed from being called a dance team to a poms team. The girls training over the summer was much more intense this summer than any summer before. The team was previously known as a jazz/hip-hop team before this summer.

One of the biggest changes they have experienced was having the dance team join them. Two of the Hawkettes were interviewed about their opinions on the changes.  “The Hawkettes have experienced big changes this year, we have been lucky enough to have the dance team combine with us. The girls have done nothing but help bring success to our team and we are all very glad to have them join us,” said sophomore, Maiya Whelan.

The girls on the team are supportive and excited to have new girls joining their team.  The dance team addition has done nothing but positive things for the team; such as, helping them bring home the gold trophy home from their first competition.

Hawkettes also have started to do dance competitions. The girls went into it slightly intimidated because they had never done a dance competition before. However, the girls continued to work hard in training and brought home the gold.

“The competition was a little intimidating because we have never been to a competition and we are all used to dance competitions and not poms. Because this was our first year doing pom routines we were not really sure what to expect as far as placing,” said freshman, Alaina Lanser.

Not only did the Hawkettes grow and start competing, they are no longer known as a dance team but as a poms team. Therefore, the girls are being taught to change from a jazz/hip-hop type of dance to a poms type of dance. This has added stress and made training much more intense for the team.

The girls have practice every day for two hours, this is what Lanser explained their practice as, “We start off with stretching, then talking about anything that needs to be done, go over the routine that you recently learned and/or using for the football game,”

The Hawkettes have been doing better than ever before. The girls are creating a respectable reputation and plan to keep it as that.  Whelan said, “I would like our team to grow stronger in poms and also get to a point where every girl on the team feels very confident with themselves and are able to uphold the reputation,”
