May 5 through May 9 is Teacher Appreciation Week across the country. To celebrate, The Arrowhead staff interviewed teachers who have made a significant impact on their time at Arrowhead and life overall. I spoke with my Spanish 4 teacher, Sra. Tracy Tomczyk, who has deepened my understanding and love for the language.
Sra. Tomcyzk did not always want to be a teacher, but during her time in Spain, she realized her love for the language and wanted to pursue a career in education. “It turned into my love for school and Spanish,” Sra. Tomcyzk said.
Her favorite part of being a Spanish teacher is continuing to learn about different cultures and people. “I love the nuances” Sra. Tomcyzk said. “I love seeing kids get passionate about different cultures too.”
A valuable lesson this job taught her was her ability to make an impact without knowing it. “What you hope they take away from your class might in fact, not be what they take away at all,” Sra. Tomczyk. Teachers have the ability to inspire their students in and out of the classroom.
Sra. Tomczyk has inspired lots of students, and many past students have reached out to connect or thank her. However, the people that inspire and motivate her the most are her two kids. “I try to do the best I can as their mom and a working mom and a teacher,” Sra. Tomczyk said. She loves to see them do their activities, talking with them, and traveling.
“Be empathetic. You have to be willing to adapt, and realize that we are all still people,” Sra. Tomczyk said. She believes that this is key advice to anyone who wants to become a teacher.
On behalf of The Arrowhead staff, thank you teachers for your hard work and dedication.
