Sendiks Food Market in Hartland and Arrowhead’s SAVE team are honoring war veterans this month

On Saturday, May 13th, between 7-8:30 am at Lake Country School, the Arrowhead SAVE team will be holding a Veteran Coffee Event. All veterans are welcome, and coffee will be provided by the Pink Mocha cafe in Hartland.

Attendees should RSVP at 262-337-3676 through voicemail or text. RSVPs can also be sent by email to [email protected].

SAVE is Arrowhead’s Survivor and Veteran Experiences team. According to the Arrowheadschools.org, “The SAVE Team (Survivor And Veteran Experience) interviews World War II veterans and Holocaust survivors in an effort to ‘save’ their stories for future generations. We also seek to educate our peers about this period in history and celebrate these brave men and women with special events and fundraising efforts. It is our hope to honor these heroes before they are gone and to make others aware of the sacrifices made by that generation.”

The SAVE team was also recognized in the fall of 2015 by Milwaukee Magazine as one of their “Reasons to Love Milwaukee.”

In addition to Arrowhead’s efforts, Sendik’s Food Market in Hartland is holding a fundraiser to honor war veterans. From now throughout the summer, customers can round their totals up to even amounts for Veterans Honor Flight, which flies war veterans to see the war memorials that honor them in Washington DC.

According to honorflight.org, “Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veterans for all their sacrifices. We transport our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill.”

The Honor Flight also states that their mission is to express respect and gratitude to these veterans before it’s too late. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. The Honor Flight organization states, “Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.”

Morgan Roelke, the SAVE team’s public relations chair, says, “SAVE is important because we help to preserve the stories of past heroes for future generations to come. Our major goals as a club are to honor veterans for all of the freedoms they have granted us and to record all of their stories so they are safe for the future. Both of these goals are extremely important because our Veterans don’t get the attention they deserve, especially from our generation, we take our mission very seriously. It’s amazing how much SAVE team members have learned about history, patriotism and compassion from our local veterans. These lessons, I believe, will carry with us for the rest of our lives.”
